(The Implementation of Blended Teaching in a Classroom)

My passion in gadgets such as internet, netbook, smartphone, and tablet are getting wider since I understand the benefits that I get from them. As an English teacher I cannot ignore the reality, that nowadays the using of those gadgets become more important. I can find many sources to support my activity from the internet.

Many people know the power of search engine to find out a needed site. There is a search engine also providing education platform that can be used as an online classroom. Of course, there are familiar online classroom such as Quipper and Edmodo. Office tools availability and online drive in the gadgets make me easy to do my official job without worrying on losing it. Furthermore, I can manage some administration staffs by using them. It can be said that the more many tools application for education provided through the gadgets, the more easiness in teaching and administering activity.

Even though there are several teachers who do not allow their students to use their smartphone or tablet in the classroom, yet I am not the one of them. In fact, the most favorable gadgets as my teaching tools and media are both of them. There are some reasons why I favor smartphone or tablet. The first reason is the availability of the internet in it. As I mention in the previous paragraph, the internet helps me to find out the teaching materials. It can really connect me to the sites that I need such as Youtube or educational sites such as Edmodo, goggle classroom, Quipper, busy teacher, british council, English Grammar for You, etc.

The second is availability applications supporting me as a teacher can be downloaded at ease. Namely, WPS office, google document, google sheet and so on. The third is social media provided such as Whatsapp, Line, Telegram and many more. Not to mention the availability of push email. Those things facilitate me to teach.

In this paper I want to share my experience in using several applications while I am teaching. The first media I used in my smartphone and tablet is the internet connection. After that, I choose the proper application to support the activity. The applications that I use frequently are Whatsapp, WPS, Google Drive, and of course gmail as well as chrome as the browser. Then, I choose the lesson will be taught in this activity. It is The Simple Past and The Past Continuous Tenses for class VIII semester 2 (it is written in the syllabus). The tenses are taught in accordance with teaching Narrative Text.

To clarify more the way I blend the gadgets in my classroom, I will explain the steps conducted. First I create a class group in Whatsapp. The main reason why I choose this application because all my VIII students have this application, so they are familiar to use it. The next reason, we can share everything through this application, so it is simple and easy. The students name the group as B. Inggris Kelas VIII. The name is so simple, direct and easy to remember.

Second, I design the teaching-learning material that I will use to teach them. To attract my students’ attention, I usually use audio visual. By using audio visual students will occupy the lesson easily, especially when it is Narrative. I search a short story from YouTube. From my experience, I find that the students can focus to the Audio Visual not more than 15 minutes. If it is more than 15 minutes, some of them start to disturb, talk, or do something else. Because of that, I choose the story that has short duration. It is Pied Piper of Hamelin Story which only has 9:05 minutes. Next, I share the video to the group, so every student can watch it. It is quite different from watching video by using a big screen through projector. Each student can watch the video freely. They can replay the video as many as they want.

Third, I prepare several short questions and instructions for the activity to make my students more engage in the lesson. The questions and instruction are given orally. The questions and instruction are delivered orally to give them time to expose their speaking ability and make the atmosphere livelier. In this activity, I let my students speak without correcting every single mistake appeared as long as the mistake is not so essential. I do this to avoid my students’ hesitation to speak.

In studying The Simple Past and The Past Continuous Tenses the students must understand verb. Because of that, one of the instructions given is to write verbs which are heard and read from the video. It is definitely to make them identify verbs. They have to understand the change of verb besides its meaning.

Fourth, I look for sites providing The Simple Past and The Past Continuous Tenses course. From many sites providing the materials, I choose www.ego4u.com, and https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en. I choose the sites that provide both the theory and exercises. Another consideration is the language used in the sites are simple and familiar for my students.

I ask my students to read the theory, then I openly invite them to make questions. Usually, my students are reluctant to question me, but it does not make me worry. If there is no question, I continue my order that they must answer the exercise given by the site. Since there is a direct result from the site, my students will know their score. After knowing the result, the students, who get low score, start to question me. They more active to question me when I tell them that the score will be put in the score list.

Fifth, I create score list in Google Sheet. Actually we can create score list in any kind of office, and then upload the list to a cloud drive. Why I choose Google Sheet? It is because I can open it in every gadget as long as there is internet connection. For me Google drive is very helpful because I can keep my work in it. We can download Google Spread Sheet, Google Document, and Google Slide that automatically can be saved in Google Drive. Since everything can be kept in Google Drive, I feel simpler and lighter when I enter the classroom.

Six, I prepare daily test for my student and share the question. In simple word, I just type the question in my gadget, save them in Google Drive, and distribute the question in the group. The student answer the question individually by messaging me privately.

Many activities can be conducted in my favourite gadgets. I can connect them easily, I can do major activities in everywhere. From my explanation about my experience in using the internet, smartphone, tablet and netbook I definitely conclude that it is paperless, fun, easy, and simple.
